What is SSSSH All About?

The basis of SSSSH is giving to total strangers anonymously. Creating more goodness in the world just for the sake of creating more goodness, that’s what SSSSH is all about – giving to strangers while partaking in little adventures, giving without stroking our egos. SSSSH members call this ego-free compassion.

Hal Reichle was a Hiram College graduate '86 who made a habit of secretly doing anonymous good deeds for strangers. Hal was killed in a helicopter crash in the 1991 Gulf War, and to continue the wonderful and unique tradition of this loving man and to perpetuate his legacy, SSSSH (Secret Society of Serendipitous Service to Hal) was formed in March of 2003.

We are all surrounded by a selfish materialistic world. SSSSH can reward us with the benefits of giving anonymously emphasizing that performing good deeds without rewards can be a special experience. This is an especially wonderful and enlightening experience for our children. See our School Programs and our Children's Page.

SSSSH is designed to promote a healthy, peaceful society that will welcome and celebrate diversity, embrace all humanity, and through acts of kindness, instill in ourselves and others compassion, creativity, imagination, and sacrifice - the true values of being human.

What are Some Examples of Anonymous Good Deeds?

All over the world people are finding bags of groceries on their door step, finding their driveway shoveled free from snow on a winter morning, having a waiter tell them their meal was mysteriously paid for by an anonymous stranger, returning home discovering their grass has been mowed, finding their car in a shopping-center parking lot freshly washed, being informed at a highway or bridge toll booth that someone has already paid their toll  - the list goes on forever!

These and many other examples of anonymous good deeds formed the basis for SSSSH, an organization created in March of 2003. See our Good-Deed Ideas Page. We are now spreading around the world to promote the goodness and honor of a fallen soldier with a heart of gold, Hal Reichle - so please join us. You are in for an adventure and experience like none other, and you will sleep each night with a warm smile on your face.  Learn the true meaning of being human!  Join SSSSH!  It's free!

How is an Anonymous SSSSH Act of Kindness Performed?

A "SSSSH" card is given to or left behind for the recipient of the good deed. For example, if you were to notice a car parked next to an expired parking meter, a SSSSH card would be placed under the car's wiper blades after you deposited money into the meter.

A "SSSSH" card is given to or left behind for the recipient of the good deed. For example, if you were to notice a car parked next to an expired parking meter, a SSSSH card would be placed under the car's wiper blades after you deposited money into the meter.

On the front of the card there is a blank line. "Put money in meter" could be written on this line so the recipient would understand what type of anonymous good deed he/she has received.

FRONT OF CARD BACK OF CARD

You are the recipient of an anonymous good deed done in the name of Hal Reichle, an individual who performed anonymous acts of kindness for strangers. A graduate of Hiram College, Hal was killed in the 1991 Gulf War. We are carrying on his anonymous-giving traditions. Have a nice day.                                         (over)

SSSSH cards in 10 different languages can be downloaded and printed from our SSSSH Card Page.

If you wanted to pay for the meal of a stranger in a restaurant, instruct the waiter to bring you the stranger's bill and hand the waiter a SSSSH card to be given to the recipient. Make sure the waiter does not reveal your identity. Even better, you should be gone from the restaurant before the waiter delivers the card. No, you won't see the recipient's happy or mystified reaction, but remember, this is ego-free compassion, a rather high level of giving.

This is how members of SSSSH perform anonymous acts of kindness enriching thousands of people’s lives all over the world every year. To read about other's anonymous good deeds, see or SSSSH Letters Page.

How is the Organization SSSSH Structured?

SSSSH is special and secret society that has quietly woven its members into the very fiber anonymous goodness. The distinctive members of our clandestine league are among you, everywhere, secretly and quietly performing serendipitous acts of kindness throughout our communities - world wide!

SSSSH is one of the most unique organizations in the world – for we are intangible, yet everywhere, structured by pure spirit and governed only by benevolent goodness. SSSSH exists solely in the compassionate spirits of our anonymous members, for we have no address, headquarters, telephone, bank account, employees, or membership cards. Our assets are the incentive, resources, imagination, and generosity of our colleagues and our future growth is bound only by the limits of imagination and love in our members’ hearts. Our main point of contact is this Website floating around in Cyberspace. Our only bylaws are anonymity and our only requirement for membership is an unsigned letter or email with no return address describing an anonymous good deed - preferably for a total stranger. Thus, we have an estimated 40,000 members, but we do not know their names or addresses. We thrive on adventure and carry serendipity around on our shoulder. Join SSSSH now!
